Here’s another production directed by the clever Lizzie Oxby!

Extn.21 is a nine minute film produced by Finetake (and commissioned by Channel 4) about one man’s desire to be heard. The film uses an innovative blend of atmospheric stop-frame animation, digital effects and live action performance to create a dark world of uncertain reality. The film won several awards, including a British Animation Award and a nomination for a British Independent Film Award.

Start-ups: Ninja style

Occasionally I complain that technology causes more grief than actually making life easier (eg when the internet goes down my life ends). However I’ve found this great open source hardware project called Ninja Blocks which actually appears to make life that little bit easier! The company is based in San Francisco and aims to provide “a two-way bridge between the things in your life and the web services you use every day.”

Huh?

Basically, Ninja Blocks connects your world with the web. They are simple but powerful open source hardware backed by a web service called Ninja Cloud that allows your Ninja Block to talk to your favorite web apps. It uses technology that acts as a “trigger” and “action” model. Users can for example configure a Ninja Block to turn on a lamp in the hallway when the baby cries or send an SMS to your phone when someone is at your front door. Ninja Cloud also seamlessly integrates into your Ninja Blocks, allowing them to easily listen and talk to web services such as Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, Weather and more.

They’re fundraising on Kickstarter so check them out if you’re looking to pledge. The more you pledge the more Ninja Block access/devices you receive so it’s kind of a cool win/win for both parties!

Storytelling: 3.2 million dots creates a masterpiece

“Hero” by Miguel Endara is a video that has been circulating the viral community for a few days now. If you’re unaware of its existence, you MUST watch this. Hero is a portrait of artist’s Miguel Endara’s father, yet what separates this piece of art from the rest is that it was created entirely out of ink dots – 3.2 million of them in fact. If the idea of it seems painful, imagine being the guy who actually did it! Every wrinkle, hair and shadow was captured and translated onto paper, so it’s no surprise that the image took over 210 hours all up to complete.

Created, Filmed, Produced and Edited (in After Effects CS4) by Miguel Endara, this isn’t the only piece of art he has created. Miguel’s website exhibits a few more of his masterpieces.

Some may find drawing an image out of 3.2 million dots pointless – some may find it amazing. Using only one pen in total however…outstanding.

(Apparently this isn’t a plug for “Sakura Pigma Micron .005“, the pen Endara used. However, I’m sure they’ll be pleased with the free advertisement…)

Water Color: Red Bull = Can + DO

I’m loving water color animation at the moment so continuing with this theme here’s another great piece from Matt Box on Red Bull’s sponsors and the individuals they fund. Taking inspiration from several Red Bull sponsored events, tours and sports including skateboarding, surfing, break-dancing, DJ competitions and Formula 1, Matt has created this piece for an animation contest with the aim to get it in the top 10 for a chance to win.

Matt has once again used rotoscoping with water color paints in conjunction with his expressive free animation and has applied a ‘Can + Do’ concept combined with the iconic Red Bull can. What grab my attention though was how the infamous Red Bull tagline had been subliminally captured in the last shot using a Red Bull sponsored break-dancer with actual wings tattooed on his back. The perfect end to the animation.

Matt’s got my vote!

Water Color: Capturing the individual style of Jason Dill

Patience isn’t one of my strong points so I take my hat off to Matthew Box for this water color masterpiece.

It’s the first in his series of hand painted studies that aim to psychedelically capture the individual styles of influential skateboarders. And first up is one of the most recognizable people in skateboarding both on and off his board, Jason Dill. As Box says “Who else would you want to see acid drop’d”?

Box sifted through loads of Dill footage, selected the tricks he liked and then went through them on a make-shift light box he built out of an old monitor (at that stage roto-scoping wasn’t a word he had heard of!). Individually hand painting them over a week until the early hours, Box found the hardest part was to cut scenes he’d spent so much time painting.

The good news? Box is currently working on a Dylan Rieder creation. I’m looking forward to seeing the latest addition to this series, although I hope it doesn’t take too long…

Sticking with the “Pushing the Limits” theme yet also perfect for our latest set of blog posts ‘Extreme Sports’ I picked a template from our website that’s a great fit to both.

Template Digital Feature: Xtreme Sports

This After Effects template is based around the adrenalin created in the human body when participating in extreme sports and can be seen as we move through the blood vessels within the package. The motion graphics are so versatile because all elements (including the music and text) are totally customizable.

I can imagine these visual effects being used in a daredevil motocross, crazy ski jump competition or something like the BMX fuelled creation from our recent Extreme Sport post where the focus is on completely pushing the limits.

As they say…we only live once!

Extreme Sports: BMX Fuelled Creation

Here’s a clever creative edit where slow mode is used at just the right times to give maximum impact to the stunts these talented BMXers are performing.

This video was filmed and edited by JC Pieri for a video contest in France. I’m not sure what the actual name of the contest was as JC doesn’t mention it on his work but apparently it was voted best video of BMX and best video of all the extreme sports presented during the festival. And once you view it you’ll see why.

Filmed with a Canon 7D and created in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 and After Effects CS5 shows that JC Pieri has some talents of his own.

The only thing missing (besides the name of the contest) is not knowing what the music track was within the video. It completes the piece perfectly.

Pushing the Limits: Extreme Sports Promo

Over the past couple of weeks we launched a new topic, Pushing the Limits. We’ve kicked it off with three examples that all use After Effects in very different ways. The other two blogs feature a tourism promo and a music video and in this blog the focus is on extreme sports.

It’s a short film that was created for the 3rd Edition Zot Movie Festival. The thing I like about it is it’s just so different to all the other surf videos and movies out there with their ‘surf music’. Both the music selection and editing takes on a totally different vibe to the usual and it works really well.

The opening song is dreamy as opposed to surf ska and with more than 2500 likes on Vimeo there are obviously a lot of other people that also like their water sports served chilled at times.

The film was shot from January to July 2010 in Reunion island at different surf locations: St Pierre/ La Tortue/ 03 Roches/ Les Brisants.

Filmed and edited by Ian Mourier at Mohetian Studio.

Pushing the Limits: Five Fingered Crows

Would you consider this video to be pushing the limits or just quirky?

This music video called Staring out the Window by Fulton Lights was directed by London Director Ninian Doff, and the crows recruited…from Clapham Common.

I think the brilliance about this After Effects creation is that it’s a small budget that packs a big punch in cyberspace. Videos are so crucial to propelling a band’s presence and there is just something about crows playing snare drums that is very captivating. Reading through the blog comments a common thread is that it got people smiling, the whole way through.

And in case you didn’t know, crows are very clever birds. Some research say as clever as Chimpanzees. But crows also have that cool factor making this a very cool music video.

Getting techy with Director Ninian Doff

“I first wrote a script so that rather than just filming any bird I was specifically looking to film, for instance, a hi-5 or a solo drummer or an interview. So I had a list of things to tick off when we filmed. Then I edited the footage before filming the greenscreen stuff. So that the arms weren’t too stiff I actually was quite free with the arm performances and angles… but luckily it somehow matched up nicely!”
